3 Ways To Shake Cabin Fever In Your Community

Cabin fever is no joke, and at this point in the winter season it is becoming a very real sentiment for a lot of people. When it’s cold outside, it is hard to feel motivated to stay active and moving. Sometimes just leaving the house feels like a workout this time of year! So how can you fight the winter blues without turning blue?

Community sports facilities and recreation centers are a perfect solution for frigid couch potatoes. Have fun and stay active, without getting frost bite!

If you manage a facility like this in your town, you know the importance of gathering people together to strengthen the community. Organizing winter activities for kids and families at your facility does a great service to combat cabin fever.

Here are 3 event ideas for inviting community members in for warmth and fun for the remainder of the winter:

1. Open Skate. If you’ve got an ice rink, odds are you already offer open skate. To freshen up an old favorite, try adding a theme to your open ice time. “Kids’ Night” and “Family Night” themes are always a hit, or a romantic “Couples Skate”  to heat things up on the ice!

2. Winter Beach Party. Indoor pools are a great place to forget the winter ice and snow. Host an poolside beach party indoors and take everyone’s mind off the cold weather! No pool at your facility? No problem! With some creative theme decorations, a community gymnasium makes a great destination for a game of “beach” volleyball - put up your indoor volleyball nets and make it party!

3. Live Olympic Screenings. Take your community to Sochi by screening primetime Olympic events in your auditorium! Get the most out of your cozy fixed seating and witness what might be the next Miracle on Ice! Will your gymnasium be doubling as the theater for this event? Protect your floor with a durable gym floor cover, put out the chairs, and voila! You’re ready for the feature presentation - the 2014 Winter Olympics!

Don’t let the winter cold get you down. The days are slowly getting longer and warmer, so have some fun at your sports facility or rec center to celebrate!
