Founded in 1816 as a military settlement after the War of 1812 and named for its Scottish counterpart, Perth is the kind of place that still feels like a small town should. Stone buildings line the town’s main streets, the Tay River winds through Stewart Park behind Town Hall, and on summer nights the ballpark is where a good chunk of the community actually is. It is also a town that takes recreation seriously, featuring ball diamonds, soccer pitches, courts, a splash pad, and the kind of weekend traffic that makes safety more than a nice-to-have. Last fall, the Town of Perth staff came calling in search of a new [netting barrier](https://www.sportsystemscanada.com/netting/). They were pleased to learn that Sport Systems designs and installs [netting barriers specifically for outdoor sports parks](https://www.sportsystemscanada.com/netting/custom-sports-netting/), and that this was a problem we see often.   ![outfield-netting-town-of-perth](https://blog.sportsystemscanada.com/hs-fs/hubfs/outfield-netting-town-of-perth.jpg?width=1131&height=848&name=outfield-netting-town-of-perth.jpg) The issue the town was facing was one that was relatively straightforward but also serious. With two softball diamonds sitting in close proximity to one another, long fly balls were leaving one field, dropping into the spectator area, and carrying all the way onto the playing surface of the neighbouring diamond. For anyone in the stands or on the other field, that is not “part of the game,” and can quickly become a real hazard. After the Town contacted our sales office, we arranged a site visit and met with the staff tasked with fixing it. The site was relatively open, with ample room past the outfield fence. The agreed solution was a [netting barrier between the two diamonds](https://www.sportsystemscanada.com/netting/baseball-softball-netting/), placed beyond the outfield fence, to cut down the chance of a stray softball reaching spectators or the other field.   ![perth-outfield-netting](https://blog.sportsystemscanada.com/hs-fs/hubfs/perth-outfield-netting.jpg?width=1131&height=848&name=perth-outfield-netting.jpg) The finished system stretches 250 feet long and 30 feet high and is supported by six utility poles, ground anchors, and our own custom hardware.
