One of our more recent projects landed us in the beautiful Leslieville/Riverdale neighborhood of East Toronto. Not far from the Don River, it’s also home to the Riverdale Collegiate Institute (RCI), which was founded in 1907 as Riverdale Technical School, and now operates as a public high school, serving around 1,340 students in grades 9-12 under the Toronto District School Board.
In addition to offering strong academic programming, the school boasts over 90 clubs and teams, including athletics, arts, and social justice initiatives and fosters a vibrant community. In the 1990s, Riverdale Collegiate Institute underwent significant renovations to modernize its facilities while preserving its historical character. The original 1907 building, designed by C.E.C. Dyson had its facade meticulously maintained to retain its architectural heritage. Other renovations included upgrades to the interior infrastructure, classroom and library upgrades, along with various accessibility improvements to ensure the school remained functional and relevant while honoring its historical significance.
While most of the major renovations took place during that timeframe, as with many other facilities, things are constantly being improved. Looking into the school’s two gymnasiums, they were both recently under some heavy renovations and turned to our team to help give the walls a new look with safety in mind. Working closely with our partners at Ash-Stevenson, together we performed detailed site inspections while the gyms were being renovated. Taking detailed measurements to verify all drawings and plans, Ash-Stevenson’s team was able to give our team everything they needed to get to work on the initial design plans for the spaces.
In addition to ensuring the walls were all safely padded for athletic play, the school also opted for custom colour configurations for the padding to match school colours along with some digital printed padding to display the school’s name and logo.
Once the drawings were approved by the school and board members, our team got to work producing the padding that would soon be installed at the historic Toronto school. Once completed, the finished product was shipped to Toronto and met by the Ash-Stevenson team who finished the installation without a hitch.
This project reflects our commitment to creating functional, visually stunning environments for students and communities. The revitalized gymnasiums at RCI stand as a testament to the school’s ongoing dedication to excellence, providing a space where students can thrive for years to come.
