We’re always proud to celebrate another successful project with our valued, repeat customers and our friends at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario are no exception to that rule. Their vibrant George Leach Centre, a cornerstone for varsity sports like basketball, volleyball, and more, demanded a seating solution that could keep up with the energy of the school and their budding athletic programming. The school made their goal clear as they were looking to efficiently equip their popular gym with portable telescopic bleachers that were easy to manage, space-efficient, and designed to elevate the spectator experience. Like always, our Kodiak 2400 Series bleachers rose to the occasion and delivered a game-changing upgrade for Algoma’s facilities team and fans alike.

Algoma University, a public undergraduate institution in Ontario, was established in 1965 and became independent in 2008, with a mission focused on cross-cultural learning, particularly with Anishinaabe communities. It operates three campuses including a main campus in Sault Ste. Marie, a modern urban campus in Brampton, and a smaller site in Timmins at Northern College, offering over 30 programs in Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities to about 5,000 students. Known for small classes and experiential learning, Algoma emphasizes affordability and student support. Its athletic programs, centered at the George Leach Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, include varsity sports like basketball, volleyball, soccer, and cross-country running, alongside intramural activities.

Algoma’s gym was quickly growing into a hub of activity, hosting thrilling games and other community events. Given their growth, their existing setup needed a refresh to better serve both spectators and staff. The university required portable telescopic bleachers that could be easily set up and stored by facilities staff, a solution that would allow them to maximize floor space when not in use. 

After close collaboration with key stakeholders from Algoma’s team, we designed a custom solution using our Kodiak 2400 Series telescopic bleachers. In the end, we designed and installed five banks, each 20 feet long, which together form an impressive 100-foot-long seating structure when fully extended. Each bank features eight rows and a full back railing system for safety, providing comfortable seating for approximately 450 spectators. The portable design allows staff to effortlessly extend the bleachers for events and retract them for storage along the wall, optimizing the gym’s versatility.

Since installation, Algoma’s facilities staff have shared glowing feedback: the Kodiak 2400 Series bleachers perform exactly as envisioned and have since created an electric atmosphere for Algoma’s Thunderbirds.
