A Customized Stand-Alone Press Box for Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School

Built in 1967 and currently serving approximately 750 students, Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in Hamilton, Ontario offers a variety of enriching programming. By offering students a safe, structured and nurturing environment, the school’s student body is able to truly develop to their full potential.

A member of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, the board serves over 49,000 students across over 100 schools in southern Ontario. Serving as home to the Bulldogs athletics department, the school supports a number of sports and athletics programs which is where our team was commissioned to help out.

In partnership with the team at the Davan Group, we were made aware of the school’s pending need for a customized press box for their outdoor sports field.  Unlike many other press boxes we design and install, this one was not part of a new or existing grandstand and would be erected independently.

As such, the press box was designed using a custom galvanized steel support structure, paired with staircase access. The 8’x12’ structure was designed for use by students and officials for the school’s busy athletics schedule, allowing for a fantastic vantage point above the action.

With a lighting control panel mounted on a nearby light standard, the school asked our team to ensure the control panel could not be reached or tampered with in any way. With that in mind, we included 6’ high picket railing along the top landing of the structure to deter any access to the light standard and control panel.

What stands today is not only highly custom in nature but a structure built to withstand the test of time and anything Mother Nature decides to throw at it across all four seasons of the year.
