Located in picturesque Kingston, Ontario, Queen’s University has been the setting for a number of our projects in recent years. Having developed a long-standing relationship with the institution while completely redeveloping the historic Richardson Stadium, we were again invited to design and install guardrails for the stadium’s perimeter.
This time however, our team was invited indoors to the school’s Athletics and Recreation Complex (ARC) to aid in designing and installing a number of new basketball systems during some pandemic-related downtime. Considering the size of the project and the number of backstops slated for installation, we broke the process down into two phases to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Kicking off phase one, we were commissioned to supply and install four new ceiling-suspended, forward-folding systems complete with height adjusters. While nothing out of the ordinary in terms of product selection, with much of what we do, the customization came in the design of the facility. While these systems are nothing outside of our standard product line, as is with much of what we do, customization came in the design of the facility.
With ceiling heights of over 37 feet, each one of these basketball systems had to be configured to fit in the space allotted while remaining adjustable in operation.
The result was some very large backstops, which ultimately matched the overall impressive look and feel of the facility.
As we continue to progress into the second phase of the project, things are only going to get more impressive. We are scheduled to install three of our hydraulic portable basketball systems, all approved for FIBA Level 1 play. Each of the systems will include custom branding, Daktronics shot clocks, and will be completed with custom unit padding.
