When it comes to extreme sports, skateboarding and BMX riding provide the recipe for heart-pulsing excitement and thrills for both spectators and participants.
Naturally, in this type of environment, safety is a prime concern. No matter the skill level, the chances of a collision or crash are extremely high and for those operating these types of facilities, there are many areas that can be made safer.
While we are used to working with traditional sports such as hockey, football, basketball and more we also do quite a bit of work in the extreme sports realm, even working closely with many Hollywood stunt teams.
Facilities that house extreme sports almost always require safety padding, which often comes customized, as each facility can be completely different.
One of our recent projects brought us to The Yard in Ottawa, a new indoor skateboard and BMX park set to open in early 2019. Considering the winter temperatures common here in Canada’s capital, an indoor facility was a no-brainer, allowing enthusiasts to practice throughout the year and hone their skills in a professionally designed facility.
We were commissioned by The Yard to design and manufacture some removable padding to be placed on some oddly shaped columns in the new facility. Given that many of these columns were wider at the base than at the top, our design team really had to customize their design to ensure they fit securely to the columns all while providing the best protection possible.
We completed these pads one at a time and even added back filler to give all pads a clean, uniform finish once installed.
