As we’ve said many times before, upgrading outdated and unsafe bleachers is a big part of what we do and shows very little signs of slowing down. Given that these seating structures are often located outdoors, years of abuse from the elements and spectators alike in time, turns to ruin.

Add in updated safety code requirements and you’ve got a situation in which schools, municipalities and other facilities are beginning to scramble to get all of their bleacher seating up to speed.

Considering the fact that these old bleachers were installed decades ago, they did not have to have all the requirements a bleacher should satisfy today.

Some common deficiencies on older bleachers are, but not limited to:

    • No aisles or aisles that are not wide enough.
    • No handrails in the aisles
    • Single foot boards (not the required double foot boards)
    • No Riser planks (creating dangerous gaps in the bleachers)
    • No Ramps to allow barrier free or ADA access
    • No ADA notch-outs within the bleacher to allow accessible seating areas.
    • End rails and back rails that are climbable and present a fall hazard
    • Wood planks that are rotting or broken

In one of our most recent projects, we were invited to beautiful New Hampshire with our partners at A Plus Athletic Products to help them get an outdated bleacher off the sidelines and a new one installed.  Working closely with the A Plus team, we got the new system designed to US safety and building code standards and quickly shipped to Dover for the final installation.

A+ and their install team installed the new, fully-accessible 10-row, 30 foot bleacher that will safely seat approximately 170 spectators including four barrier free seating areas.
