Located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, the town of Whitby is a commuter suburb serving as the eastern portion of the Greater Toronto Area. Comfortably located between the communities of Ajax and Oshawa, the town is home to over 100,000 residents.
Moving to the town’s northern, rural roots is the community of Brooklin and home to one of our recent bleacher projects. A fairly new school, Brooklin High School was constructed in 2015 and currently serves roughly 1,000 students as part of the Durham District School Board.
In addition to its academic prowess, the school has always maintained a commitment to athletics, offering programming in basketball, rugby, football, volleyball, golf, hockey, curling, lacrosse and more. In fact, in 2018 the boys’ hockey team won gold while their female counterparts took home bronze at that year’s OFSAA AAA championships.
In addition to the school’s indoor athletic facilities, it was time to enhance what was started outdoors at the school’s full-service sports field.
It was here where our involvement in this project began to take shape after we were approached with the project in the spring of 2019. Making reference to the athletic accomplishments of the relatively young school, it was very apparent to us that the principal and athletic director were serious about athletics and were in search of a trusted partner to make their dreams of the future a reality.
With a large grassy area surrounding the school’s new scoreboard, stakeholders wanted our team to assess the possibility of erecting a bleacher seating structure on the knoll in a safe manner that would still provide spectators with unbeatable sightlines.
To address these specific requests, we needed boots on the ground and so quickly dispatched key members of our sales and design teams to meet with school officials and discuss possible plans for the build. During our site visit, details regarding design preferences, capacities and much more were tabled before our team was back at our headquarters to begin the design process.
The end product was a 42’ bleacher system, complete with rear and side guardrails for additional safety that would safely accommodate the prospective spectator count originally requested. We proudly leaned on our esteemed partners at King Carpentry to assist us in completing the installation ahead of the 2019 school year.
Top to bottom, key stakeholders including the school’s principal are extremely pleased with the new bleachers and look forward to another successful year of academics and athletics at Brooklin High.
