Nestled quietly in one of Ottawa’s western suburbs lies the Amberwood Village Golf and Recreation Club. Situated on 50-acres land, the club is now made up of a challenging 9-hole golf course, a 60-foot heated outdoor swimming pool and 10 brand new pickleball courts.
While the golf course has always been abuzz with local golfers, it is the newly-minted pickleball courses that seem to have experienced the biggest amount of growth. Following the pandemic, the Club went through a number of improvements across all of their facilities, including the pool and pickleball courts.
As recreation got back to normal, the golf course was once again filled with local golfers and the pool and pickleball courts too found additional users. Given the rise in popularity of all of the Club’s offerings, we were invited to the site by senior staff in the fall of 2023 to give them an assessment on the safety of one particular hole on the course. The final fairway runs alongside the pickleball courts and the swimming pool and with more balls in play than ever before, management was growing concerned about the safety of their patrons.
We walked the course alongside key stakeholders to get a better understanding of the risks and to help us in recommending the best possible solution for their pending problem.
Based on the proximity to the fairway, our team recommended designing two new impressive netting barriers to run alongside both the pickleball courts and the swimming area. Once the concept was drawn up and pitched to the board, it was unanimously agreed that the new barriers were a necessity and our team quickly got to work.
After creating the netting barrier, we had the poles shipped directly to the club for final installation. Given that the new barriers were set to be a whopping 50’ above grade, this was no easy feat.
That said, our team is always up to the challenge, and fortunately have plenty of experience with barriers of this size (and bigger). The job was completed in the early spring ahead of the pending golf season and just as quickly did the golfers return to the course, they were greeted by our towering barriers.
Now catching errant balls before they become a safety issue, the barriers are a new fixture at this local golf course that continues to grow in both popularity and community pride.
