When it comes to installing large custom grandstands on existing sites, they can often come with their own set of unique challenges. Balancing the client's ambitious goals with practical constraints and budget realities requires creativity, expertise, and close partnership.
Existing properties bring their own hurdles, such as:

- • Limited travel space from parking areas to the grandstand and surrounding zones
- • Strict seating capacity targets (this project demanded a minimum of 1,200 seats)
- • Full barrier-free access and dedicated accessible seating
- • An elevated front deck to ensure optimal sightlines for every spectator
- • Pre-existing substructures and underground services that must be navigated carefully
As we approached one of our more recent projects for the Q’unq’inuqwstuxw Turf Field in Nanaimo, BC, we joined forces with our trusted partners at MKM Projects to deliver a standout custom grandstand that both overcame these obstacles and exceeded expectations.
Working closely with MKM and other key stakeholders involved in the project, we ended up designing this impressive grandstand bleacher featuring comfortable backrests for extended viewing, a custom rise engineered for superior sightlines, optimized row spacing for easier access to and from seats, multiple custom ramps and stairs to ensure smooth, inclusive flow and managed to top it all off with a spacious 30-foot-long press box, complete with three dedicated rooms for media and coaching staff from both teams
The final result is a grandstand boasting over 1,300 seats, including 20 barrier-free seating areas — surpassing the minimum requirement and providing exceptional accessibility and comfort for all to enjoy.
This bleacher is such a beautiful addition to the City of Nanaimo and is now ready to host large-scale sporting events, community gatherings, and memorable moments for years to come at the Q’unq’inuqwstuxw Turf Field.
