Working, once again, with the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB), one of our recent projects took us back to beautiful Kingston, Ontario. Lying at the mouth of the Cataraqui and St. Lawrence rivers, the city is known for its storied history and academic excellence serving as the home for Queen’s University, St. Lawrence College and the Royal Military College of Canada.

Having worked in the area across a multitude of projects, it’s always great to get back and continue to approve athletic facilities in and around one of our favorite cities.

We got a call from the ALCDSB as they were looking for some upgrades for one of their older schools. Located directly downtown, the École catholique Cathédrale was in search of some much needed upgrades to their existing basketball systems.

When it comes to older schools and facilities, there are always a number of questions and concerns that need to be addressed. What can seem as inconsequential upgrades, can involve many technical layers that need to be accounted for when performing any upgrade in an outdated facility.

Because of this, a site visit was in order. Our team was dispatched to the school to have a look at pertinent areas inside the gymnasium such as the overall structural integrity of the building, ceiling and wall construction as well as potential access points for the equipment needed to make such a renovation possible.

Working with stakeholders at the board level, our teams together were able to draft up a number of solutions for the school. Once a plan was put in place, along with detailed drawings, the project got the go-ahead and our team began the manufacturing and planning process.

All of the material was delivered late in the summer months and was met by our installation team for the final install. Today, the school is home to state-of-the-art ceiling-suspended basketball systems complete with glass backboards and competition-grade hoops.
