Education is a highly competitive field not only for applicants, but for schools themselves. With
an increased number of colleges to choose from, as including options for studying abroad or in other parts of the country, schools are faced with the challenge of distinguishing themselves from their competition. Algonquin College, with its main campus in Ottawa, Ontario, is a leading example in successfully recruiting and retaining students.
Part of Algonquin College’s success is due to its appeal to a large demographic. Not only are
traditional bachelor’s degrees available to students, but apprenticeship and certificate programs are also offered for those seeking an alternative to traditional post-secondary education. Furthermore, the programs and degrees offered by the college appeal to a variety of interests, ranging from arts and design to sport business management and health sciences.
Reflecting their drive to accommodate a wide variety of pursuits, the college also offers an extensive selection of extracurricular activities. Popular on campus are their women’s basketball team who recently received the title of the 2019-2020 OCAA Women’s Basketball East Division Champions. Encouraged by the success of the team, as well as the school’s various other athletic programs, an investment was made to provide top-quality facilities for their student athletes.
Installed within the Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC), Sport Systems provided new basketball systems for an extremely complex project. An impressive 125,500 square-foot building (Clark), the gymnasium possesses ceilings that exceed five stories in height. Not only did the extreme measurements of the room pose a challenge in safely installing the new equipment, but the mezzanine track and broadcasting booth needed to be worked around in order to preserve visibility. It was with the assistance of PCL Constructors and other sub-trades that our team was able to successfully install two ceiling-suspended systems, four wall-mounted systems, and wall padding to the upper gymnasium. Additionally, we provided the lower gymnasium with six basketball systems and wall padding.
With a population of approximately 19,957 full-time students (“Fast Facts”), it’s clear that Algonquin College is a popular choice for many reasons. It is our hope that our recent contribution to the gymnasium will assist the college in encouraging students to enroll for years
to come.
