Located in a historic district of Canada’s National Capital, the York Street Public School has been a fixture in Ottawa’s Lowertown neighborhood since it was built in 1921. Having been constructed in what is known as the Collegiate Gothic Style, even through decades of development that has taken place around the school, its original design still reigns true to this day.
The school is now operated by the Ottawa Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) and while its exterior remains relatively unchanged since its inception, the school has been making efforts to modernize the inside of the school. Without running the risk of losing the facility’s charm the city has come to love, some major upgrades were slated for the summer of 2024, and we were invited to participate by our friends at Freecon Construction.
The gymnasium was in need of a complete renovation and as part of the project, the original brick wall facade inside the gymnasium was also in need of a facelift.
Included in the upgrades were a number of new indoor basketball systems that would require a complete padding solution to be placed below each backstop. In addition to the brick walls, a few of the backstops featured customized stainless steel plates below the baskets that would need to be covered but still accessible for on-going service requirements.
With detailed measurements in hand, our tech team got to work designing the custom padding required for each area of wall underneath the basketball systems. After a quick review of our drawings, the plans were approved and the manufacturing process kicked off.
It wasn’t long before the padding rolled out of our factory and directly to the school where it was soon installed by our experienced team. Adding another touch of modern safety to a new gymnasium, these new pads are sure to provide adequate protection for the next phase of students at the historic York Street Public School in Ottawa.
