We may not recognize the significance of this type of equipment while on the court and purchasing one may seem a simple task. But buying the right net can reveal just how much of a difference there is between products. One of the most common distinctions between nets is whether the product is tapered vs. non-tapered. Below, we will explain the results that are determined by each style of product. Should I Get a Tapered or Non-Tapered Tennis Net? The purpose of a tapered tennis net is to prolong the life of the product. This is accomplished by cutting the net in a way so that it is 42” at the posts, but tapers down to 36” in the middle. The tapered cut prevents (or minimizes) how much of the bottom of the net rubs against the court along its centre. By helping to prevent wear and tear to the bottom, the net remains playable for a longer period of time. Purchasing a cheaper tennis net may be more appealing than spending more money on a higher-quality product. However, when considering the appearance and longevity of low-quality nets, one’s finances are not necessarily spared. Cheap tennis nets tend to fail along the bottom edge or bottom “tape”, due to the way they are constructed. With a high-quality net, the bottom edge will not rub against the ground as much with a tapered style. Additionally, tapering gives a clean and finished look to a net whereas a non-tapered net can appear to be baggy or improperly installed. When Should I Get a Non-Tapered Net? No tennis expert would recommend a non-tapered net if you have the budget for one that is tapered. However, if you’re looking to get the most bang for your buck and stretch your dollars, you’ll need to consider various factors beyond tapered vs. non-tapered styles. Understanding all of the aspects that go into purchasing a tennis net help in making a sound decision. Features to consider include the net’s thickness, the type of headband used, the net cable, the side tapes, and the bottom tapes. As discussed, the best tennis nets will be designed in a tapered style. However, if your budget has you choosing between a non-tapered net that checks all the boxes or a low-end tapered net that doesn’t, the decision becomes a bit more difficult. One of the biggest factors you need to consider is the thickness of the netting itself. Thicker netting will far outlast thinner netting in durability and longevity. How Long Will a Tapered or Non-Tapered Net Last? It’s impossible to say just how long a tennis net will last regardless of whether or not it’s tapered. The lifespan of each product depends on the court surface and weather conditions, among other variables.
