Modern designs and models of basketball systems have evolved a long way over the years. Sifting through the sometimes overwhelming selection of pole sizes, backboard types, adjustments and other such features can leave most potential buyers a bit lost when trying to select the best system for their facilities unique needs. At Sport Systems, we have years of experience with basketball systems, in fact, it was basketball hoops that founded our company!

This quick and informative guide will walk you through the terminology and parts of our in-ground basketball systems. We carry two models of outdoor in-ground basketball systems that have served our clients’ needs for many years now. Our BBIG Series is the most rugged and recognizable basketball systems in the outdoor sporting market. A popular choice for recreation departments, schools and community playgrounds, this goal features a welded flange, while competitors systems typically feature a “slip-on” flange that constantly requires retightening due to vibration.

Our other outdoor in-ground basketball goal is the GP100 Series, and is a step above the BBIG Series for those looking for a slightly higher-end outdoor basketball system that can stand up to repeated use and the elements. The GP100 allows our customers to select their backboard material, backboard size extension lengths and is equipped with an industry-exclusive heavy-gauge triangular extension arm and thick bracing allowing for extended board stability.

With North American groundhogs recently predicting a longer winter season than we had hoped, even the idea of a mere six weeks, gives us all hope that we will soon be swinging the sticks.

As with any new product or service, it will obviously take some time to determine the true success or failure of Google Glass. Over the past few months however, you might have noticed that more and more professional sports teams and athletes are beginning to experiment with Glass.  Could Google Glass eventually become a part of the sporting equipment world?

A common question as most of us can recall a time or situation where we have seen both the diamond hung design as well as the square hung design with regards to netting. Here are a couple of ways to tell the difference, and the advantages to each:

Diamond Mesh

Because of the way this mesh is hung, it drastically reduces the amount of netting needed to cover a certain area, and hence, can often be the less-expensive option between the two. This being said, there are also problems that arise from hanging your net in this fashion.

Diamond hung meshed nets do not typically hang as straight, and it’s pattern will often cause the netting to be pulled in from the sides. This design often is equipped with poorer seams as well. The main reason for this being, the rope border has to be sewn diagonally across the meshes, which leaves an irregular net border to sew to.

When we think gymnasium flooring, we immediately think basketball, volleyball, badminton and other sports played in indoor gymnasiums. The fact of the matter is, the gym floor in your institution is often used for so much more.

Today, gymnasiums have transformed into multi-use rooms, hosting sporting events, pep rallies, assemblies, dances, drama productions and more. The unfortunate reality is these non-sporting events are much harder on your gymnasium flooring than the day-to-day sporting activities typically housed in gymnasiums.

While traditional traffic from sports like basketball and volleyball indeed adds wear and tear to your gym floor surface, additional damage is done when the gymnasium is used for other events. The dragging of chairs, tables and other furniture combined with increased traffic of patrons without clean footwear, lead to unnecessary deterioration of your gymnasium floor surface.

Most gym floor cover systems comprise of multiple pieces allowing your gymnasium some versatility when covering your floor. This article will briefly go over a few adhesives that we recommend and a few that do not belong anywhere near your gymnasium floor.

Glues & Other Adhesives

We highly recommend against the use of any glues or other residential or industrial grade adhesives for use on your gymnasium floor or cover. Glues and adhesives are prone to leakage and can be extremely difficult to loosen or remove from covers and gym floors.

Tape

The Maple Floor Manufacturers Association does not recommend the use of masking, theatrical, construction, electrical, duct or any other adhesive type tape found on the market today. The reasoning is simple; it is highly likely that the tape, when removed, will peel away layers of the floor’s surface finish.

Aluminum Bleachers

Aluminum bleachers have been in use for decades in ball parks, race tracks, football stadiums and many other sporting venues. When compared to the wooden bleachers we used to see at sporting venues, it’s apparent that the durability of aluminum is much greater than that of wood.
